Frequently Asked Questions

How does Shiatsu work?

By stimulating specific areas of the body, corresponding to certain functions, shiatsu helps the body to heal itself. It supports the defence mechanisms and supports the ability of the body to heal itself by helping it to re-balance areas that have come out of sync with other parts of the body. Shiatsu works from the inside using the body's natural abilities, its own resources to heal.

What can I expect during my first Shiatsu session?

When someone is completely novice to Shiatsu I would recommend having an introduction session. The practitioner will explain in details how shiatsu work and will discuss with the client what can be achieved. The customer is normally asked to complete a questionnaire, which is discussed with the practitioner and then recommendations can be made. It is important that both the client and the practitioner understand what level of improvement can be expected from a shiatsu session without giving false hopes.

Are there conditions for which Shiatsu is not recommended?

Some forms of cancer and some skin conditions such as multiple sclerosis, some heart conditions if unstable, generally with contagious diseases, infectious skin problems, during a fever (as the body is already working hard to fight the infection) and immediately after a major surgery.

Does it hurt? What do people feel during a session?

It really depends on people's personalities and on the areas of the body that need to be looked at. As we are dealing with finger pressure some zones in our body are more sensitive than others and some people are more sensitive than others so it is hard to tell until someone experiences the pressure for themselves. There are also times when a practitioner needs to increase the pressure to achieve a "release" effect on that particular zone but one thing is certain it is not in the interest of the practitioner or the patient to put the patient in any discomfort whatsoever.

What would I feel after a session?

Some people will feel very tired and would want to sleep. This sleep is uselly very beneficial and deep.

Some people will feel really energized straight away or withing a few hours.

Some people will feel nothing for a day or two.

Some will feel some pain and soreness in areas where blockages have been released and some around their kidneys when lots of toxins have been released.

In general people have a feeling of wholeness, their body feeling just better connected, "more together" is a comment that we frequently receive.

The same can behaviours can be observed in animals after having received a shiatsu session, some horses will go for a snooze, some with gallop in their field, some will drink and settle nicely in their paddock or stable; some dogs would want to play or run very fast, some will sleep heavily for a while.
